My family is presently covered by Cobra - I was laid off on 2/17 - same day stimulus plan was signed. We went a month w/o coverage, and paid out of pocket for only the most necessary meds.
My son has adhd, so that was a no brainer. His Vyvanse was $135. Finally, rather than paying $875 for a family of four, we waited it out, and ended up paying $315 for health and dental. I know we're blessed to have it, but would rather have a job. Due to the fact that I'm a cancer survivor w/multiple sclerosis, I don't qualify for any kind of insurance except large group, so will have to stay w/Cobra until I find work. Also, being on Vyvanse w/ADHD, my son will be excluded from any personal health coverage my husband could try and get us.
To complicate things, my MS med runs over $2300 / mo w/o insurance, or $1600 / mo w/insurance. I found the Chronic Disease Fund, and even with insurance and two incomes qualified for an annual grant that covers my copay, so I now only pay $25 / mo.
The CDF is funded by the manufacturers, so if you're dealing w/a chronic disease, go to www.cdfund.org to see if they cover your specific disease (breast cancer, MS, etc.)
Also, NORD (National Organization for Rare Diseases) www.rarediseases.org is a great resource to find help and coverage.
Fortunately two yrs. ago I appplied to and was accepted to the Chronic Disease Fund. I was awarded a Grant that covers up to the $3,000 / yr. for my out of pocket expenses on my Copaxone injections - they are $1600 / month, and I have a $300 deductible, then pay a % after that. Because of the CDF, and the grant, I only pay $25 / month. Without CDF, I couldn't stay on my injections, which help minimize my MS episodes severity and duration.
As a thyroid cancer survivor, I'm also kept clinically hyper-thyroid to keep the cancer from returning. In total, I'm on 12 different pills and an injection each day, so CDF truly saved me, and I hope someone can use this information to find help as well.
Be Blessed, J
